Okay, so I still love zombies...

Outbreak: The Hunger
by Scott Shoyer
212 pages
$2.99 Kindle Version

Severed Press has recently released to debut novel, Outbreak: The Hunger, by Scott Shoyer. Shoyer promises readers that this is a virus they haven't seen before in the undead genre, and I have to agree.

Shoyer's creation is a parent's nightmare: trying to protect your child when you can't even protect yourself. He lures readers down the rabbit hole with an intense setup, only to have the rabbit tear our guts out as the characters fight for survival, page after page.

There are two different storylines: one follows a group of soldiers trying to contain the outbreak, and one follows a group of families at the Austin Zoo...and the families are essentially at the epicenter of this infection.

The action scenes are quick and brutal, but the "calm" parts are anything but soothing. Shoyer dangles false hope in front of readers, then unleashes a flurry of death and dismemberment, slaughtering his characters, piece by piece.

It will be a long time before I take my son to the zoo again...

Meanwhile, Shoyer has revealed that this is just the first book in a trilogy that he hopes will stand out:

"Sure there are a lot of zombie novels out there, but I set out to give horror and zombie fans something different. I didn’t want to write just another version of the same old story … and I didn’t.” Shoyer

Joe McKinney, the bad-ass horror author of the DEAD WORLD series, wrote the intro for Shoyer's debut:

“Not only is [OUTBREAK: THE HUNGER] the kind of wild ride you expect from good old fashioned horror, but it is a zombie novel with a truly original take on the genre.  I guarantee you, the story has not been told this way before.  I envy you getting to read it for the first time.”
